Rail replacement
18th and 21st March, Aiskew Crossing
A welded joint with a defect required removal, the flat bottom rail on the right side of the picture was in good condition so the decision to replace the short length of Bull head rail was taken.
The rail was cut so that the weld was removed, a replacement bull head rail was then cut to the right length to fit the gap left behind by the removal of the old rail.
A hand drill is used to bore the new holes for the track circuit wires. This joint is on the circuit of an automatic level crossing. In this picture you can see the old rail in the four foot and the addition of new fishplates on what was the bad welded joint.
Track circuit wires in place. Again the old rail can be seen lying the four foot with the bad weld and a small section of FB rail.
The replacement rail required new holes to allow the fishplates to be secured. This joint is insulated as part of the track circuit for the crossing, it is possible to see the insulator that used to fill the gap between the two ends of the rails.
The rail drill is used along with a guide (seen here clamped to the top of the rail) to bore the new holes required to fit the fishplates.
1 more to go
The insulated fishplates are in place and just require tightening up.
